'Legalising cannabis can end exploitation and help farmers'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

In Morocco parliament are considering a law that would allow cannabis to be grown and sold legally for medical and industrial purposes. The recreational use of cannabis in the country however would still remain illegal. One of the aims of the proposed law change is to stop the exploitation of farmers growing the drug mainly in the northern Rif mountains. This new drive to legalise cannabis comes after the UN drug agency downgraded it and removed it from its list of "most tightly controlled narcotic drugs". The Â鶹Éç's Nora Fakim has been speaking to Moroccan journalist Najib Ben Cherif about the potential law change. (Image: A field of cannabis in Morocco. Credit: Getty Images)
