Episode details

Available for over a year
French ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to three years in jail, two of them suspended, for corruption. He was found guilty of trying to bribe a magistrate by offering him a prestigious job in return for information about a separate criminal case against him. He is the first former French president to receive a custodial sentence. In the ruling, the judge in Paris said Sarkozy could serve a year at home with an electronic tag, rather than go to prison. 麻豆社 correspondent Hugh Schofield explains the charges - and why this is such a "shaming conviction". "He's on the record book as someone who's resorted to corruption and influence to get his way. " Photo: Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrives at court, November 2020 Credit: Getty Images
