Some 18,000 people have been evacuated from severe floods across New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. Days of torrential downpours have caused rivers and dams to overflow around Sydney - the state capital - and in south-east Queensland. More heavy rainfall predicted. It also said that some 10 million people across every state and territory, except Western Australia, were now under a weather warning. Prof Dr Jamie Pittock, an environmental expert at The Australian National University in Canberra, says much of the damage wrought by the flooding could have been avoided. He says that climate change has exacerbated the floods, and blames "lackadaisical" planning regulations for the numbers of houses being built in areas likely to flood.
