Covid-19: Why India has halted export of the AstraZeneca vaccine

Newshour

Available for over a year

India has exported more than 60 million vaccine doses to 76 countries so far, with the majority of these being the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab. However, India's largest vaccine manufacturer, the Serum Institute of India (SII), has now delayed shipments of the AstraZeneca jab to several countries in recent days, including the UK and Brazil because of a surge in new cases of Covid-19 means the doses are needed for India's own rollout, with a squeeze suspected to continue for another six weeks. Ashok Malik, Policy Advisor for India's Ministry of External Affairs, explains why this temporary halt is taking place.
