Brazil has recorded more than 321,000 deaths from Covid-19. Over 66,000 deaths were recorded in March alone - around a quarter of the global total - in a country with less than 3% of the world's population. President Jair Bolsanaro remains opposed to local lockdown measures, even as waiting lists grow for intensive care units in overstretched hospitals. Dr Pedro Hallal is an epidemiologist in southern Brazil and the principle investigator of the largest epidemiological study on Covid in Brazil. He explains explains how a campaign against mask-wearing and distancing, and President Bolsonaro himself discouraging people against the vaccine, have driven the numbers up. "It's a perfect storm... Brazil is now the world champion in doing the wrong things against Covid." Photo: A coffin is buried at the Vila Formosa cemetery in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on March 31, 2021 Credit: Getty Images
