Cases of Covid-19 have been rising sharply in India, and as many of a quarter of these have been been confirmed in the state of Maharashtra, which has India's largest city, Mumbai, as its capital. Hospitals there have been reported to be running out of beds. Dr Rahul Ghule, who runs a number of private clinics which specialise in affordable healthcare, describes how the sudden increase in numbers was not expected, how that's been driven by many people not following the recommendations on social distancing and mask wearing, and how regular and complete lockdowns are necessary. "It was not expected that the second wave would be so dangerous." Photo: A man with a child at a railway station in Mumbai, India Credit: EPA
