President Biden has made the decision to pull US forces out of Afghanistan. Although he confirmed the withdrawal of US military forces by September, he also pledged to continue diplomatic and humanitarian support.聽The Taliban for their part have said they will not engage in peace talks until all foreign forces have left.聽聽And there are serious concerns that the absence of US forces will lead to further instability and greater Taliban dominance. Chris Alexander, a former Canadian ambassador to Afghanistan who also served as deputy United Nations envoy, outlines what the impact of the withdrawal could be, and how the Taliban could respond. "Privately, I think there is a lot of concern... people involved in the negotiations believe this is just going to embolden the Taliban."
