India Covid-19 second wave: Why are there so many new cases?

Newshour

Available for over a year

For the first time, India has registered a daily total of more than 200,000 new confirmed Covid cases, and the number of Covid-related deaths stands at over 1,000 for the second day running.聽Infections are surging in many parts of the country, with the numbers of new cases doubling in the past ten days. Dr Swapneil Parikh, researcher at the Kasturba Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Mumbai, explains what he believes lies behind this latest surge in numbers, which includes low vaccination rates and supplies, festivals such as Kumbh Mela still going ahead, election rallies in some places and public reluctance to wear masks or socially distance.
