India is seeing soaring infection rates, a rapidly rising death toll and the discovery of a new virus variant. The spike has overwhelmed hospitals, creating a critical shortage of oxygen, intensive care beds and ventilators. Some say that measures to contain the infection, such as local lockdowns, were brought in too late and that a level of complacency in central government allowed new infections to take hold. Baijayant Panda, National Vice President of India's ruling BJP , believes that the Indian government should take credit for having handled the initial stages of the pandemic so well, and that the responsibility for the current situation lies ultimately with individual states.
