'Pressure from the international community made him back down'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has said he will no longer seek a two-year extension to his term in office. His original plan to extend his term had been viewed as political and sparked clan-based fighting in Mogadishu between soldiers supporting and opposing him. Focus on Africa’s Esau Williams asked Professor Abdi Samatar from the University of Minnesota and author of the book, Africa's First Democrats, what he thought about the decision.
