The Norwegian Refugee Council’s country director for Libya, Dax Roque, says it’s estimated that there are around half a million refugees and migrants in Libya, who are hoping to use the country as a transit point to Europe. Boat crossings from the Libyan coast lead to a high number of deaths, with the country’s coastguard reporting that 11 people drowned in the most recent disaster. Mr. Roque says this tragedy was “completely avoidable”, and the Norwegian Refugee Council is calling for governments to commit more resources to rescuing people at sea.
