Germany should pay reparations to Herero and Nama peoples

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Germany's official acknowledgement of committing genocide during its colonial occupation of what is now Namibia, is just the first step in atoning for past wrongs, according to an activist. Tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people were killed in the massacres of the early twentieth century. Germany has apologised for the atrocities and has offered $1.3bn towards development projects in affected communities. Joyce Muthengwa is the deputy spokesperson for The Landless People's Movement, whose ancestors directly suffered under German colonial rule. She told Focus on Africa's Esau Williams that Germany should also be "bound to pay reparations".
