The US and Russian presidents have described their first summit in Geneva as positive and constructive, though both made it clear that significant differences remain. In a final joint statement Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin said the meeting demonstrated that even in periods of tension they could make progress on shared goals. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to arms control, and said they were restoring their ambassadors to their posts. Matthew Rojansky, director of the Wilson Center鈥檚 Kennan Institute, summarises the summit's outcome. He says although the fact there was a joint statement that recognised 'a nuclear war cannnot be won and so therefore should never be fought', a precise agreement around the next steps in this 'high stakes relationship' still needs to be clarified.
