According to a World Bank statement a few months ago, Afghanistan's economy is "shaped by fragility and aid dependence", and economic prospects look even more uncertain now. It's not known how the Taliban will administer the financial institutions of the country or how businesses will operate. Dr Kamran Bokhari, Director of Analytical Development at the Newlines Institute in Washington DC, US, says that the fact that the economy never took off convincingly and has always been dependent on international assistance, means that the Taliban will need that to continue.
