The Taliban enforced a strict version of Islamic law when they ran Afghanistan before 2001, and many fear the limitations on women's working and social lives will remain. The UN has highlighted "credible" reports of abuses by the Taliban, notably restrictions on women. Two sisters, Maryam and Fatema (not their own names) describe how their lives have changed since the Taliban takaover. They had previously been working and studying, but have not been out since the takeover. They say they are desperate to leave the country and have been contacting embassies, but have not had a response. "We're really scared. When the foreigners leave Afghanistan, what will the Taliban do to the women? We have lost our everything. My only goal is to leave the country."
