Hundreds of properties have been destroyed and thousands of people have fled their homes after a volcanic eruption on La Palma in the Spanish Canary Islands. It's been going on for the best part of three weeks now.聽 The lava flow has already destroyed more than 650 homes and covers an area of nearly 270 hectares and it's now reached the coast.聽 But things are far from quietening down. The 麻豆社's James Menendez has been speaking to volcanologist Alexis Schwartz who's on La Palma. He says that a new vent has now opened up, with new lava flow, which threaten more properties on the island. "The bad news is that this new vent... is new lava flow, and this is going to find its way towards the coast, and this is going to affect more property." To make matters worse, he also says that the lava flow is running through the banana plantations, burning plastic coverings on the way through and releasing "huge toxic clouds". That's in addition to the toxic gases being produced from the lava mixing with sea water. Photo shows: The Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma. Credit: Getty Images
