New series Maid on Netflix tackles poverty, domestic abuse, motherhood and homelessness, and is inspired by the 2019 memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land. Despite the hard-hitting themes, it’s proving to be a word-of-mouth hit and Netflix says it’s on track to beat The Queen’s Gambit as its most-watched miniseries, with the programme also being praised for its realistic depiction of emotional abuse. To explore this and Maid’s apparent popularity, Chloe Tilley spoke to Rachael Sigee, a TV critic, and Caron Kipping, a divorce and separation coach and Independent Domestic Violence Advocate.
