Zimbabwe forestry project to partner with rock band Coldplay on 'green' tour
Focus on AfricaAvailable for over a year
A Zimbabwean environmental community organisation has been selected as a conservation partner for the British mega-rock band Coldplay, when the group embark on an ecologically friendly world tour next March. Coldplay are aiming to reduce their carbon emissions on the Music of Spheres tour in various ways, including planting a tree for every ticket sold and using people powered energy on a kinetic floor to generate electricity. The My Trees/Miti Yangu Trust wants to reverse the destruction and degradation of Zimbabwe's woodlands - an estimated 330 000 hectares of indigenous trees are lost every year due to agricultural activity and the exploitation of natural resources. Co-founder Nick de Swardt says the Trust first approached Coldplay frontman Chris Martin several years ago for help with their mission, and reveals the singer also has strong family ties with the country.
