Around 20 people have been killed and tens of thousands made homeless after Cyclone Batsirai brought strong winds and rain to Madagascar last weekend. Whole villages are feared to have been swept away and, with the planting grounds at the centre of the area worst hit, crops have been destroyed. Pasqualina di Sirio, the World Food Programme Country Director for Madagascar, says that combination of recent droughts, and now the rain, have seen arable land and food supplies devastated. However, she says that the government had prepared the best they could, and, as the threat of more extreme and frequent weather events increases, there are initiatives in progress to plant crops more adapted to cyclone conditions. She says that systems are needed to put these in place, and investment is needed.
