Truth Social: Trump launches new social media platform

Newshour

Available for over a year

Donald Trump's social media platform, Truth Social, has launched, in a limited form, on the US Apple App Store. The former US president had tens of millions of followers on Twitter and Facebook, before he was banned from the platforms following the attack on the US Congress on January 6th last year. On its website, Truth Social describes itself as a "big tent social-media platform that encourages an open, free and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology". Professor Ralph Schroeder of the Oxford Internet Institute at Oxford University, says that he expects many of the former president's followers to join the platform, which comes at a time when Trump is looking for a means to communicate with them, as he is under investigation due to ongoing inquiries into his affairs, and the fact the Republican Party in the US is gearing up to the mid term elections in November. He says the main challenge will be around moderation, as Truth Social will attract both his supporters and detractors, which could lead to some "extreme conversations". "He needs an outlet, and to be able to bypass the normal, media gatekeepers." Photo: A montage of Truth Social's graphics reflected on a screen with Donald Trump's face Credit: Getty Images
