Historic pledge on plastics reached in Nairobi

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The UN has agreed to start negotiating the first ever global treaty to tackle the issue of plastic pollution. A historical deal to end plastic pollution has been reached at the just concluded UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi. Prior to the conference, countries such as Rwanda and Peru had called on the assembly to adopt a global treaty to rid the world of plastic waste. The assembly instead approved a roadmap that will possibly lead to the world's first ever global plastic pollution treaty. Rwanda's Minister of Environment Jeanne d'Arc Mujawamariya was instrumental in shaping the discussions at the assembly. She's been telling Esau Williams why the world should care about this deal.
