Ukraine conflict: Why I'm leaving Sumy

Newshour

Available for over a year

More than two million people have now fled Ukraine to neighbouring countries, according to the UNHCR. On Wednesday, Russia has agreed a new 12-hour ceasefire to allow civilians to flee six of the worst-affected areas in Ukraine - which includes the north-eastern city of Sumy. Anastasia, a 22-year-old medical student, is from Sumy. On Monday, she was not planning to leave as she didn't trust the Russian army not to attack the routes but now she is on the road to Poltava, having made the difficult decision to leave her mother and grandparents behind. She says she has done what she can to make them safe, and that she hopes she can stay in Ukraine, to carry on looking after them and to continue her medical studies. She says she doesn't mind how long the journey takes provided the road stays safe. "As long as the Russians keep their word and the road stays safe, it doesn't matter how long it takes."
