Escape from Mariupol: 'The city is turning into a cemetery'

Newshour

Available for over a year

Mariupol is a key strategic target for the Russian military. Around 300,000 people are believed to be trapped there with supplies running out and aid blocked from entering. President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Russia's constant bombing of Mariupol, calling it "a terror that will be remembered for centuries to come". Olga spoke to Newshour through a translator. She got out of the city with her mother, her husband and her six year old son. She says the city is unrecognisable, with bodies in the streets and buildings destroyed. She describes how they took their chance between the shelling, and joined a convoy in the family car which had been hit by Russian shelling when it was parked on the street. It had a smashed windscreen and a missing back window that had been taped over to keep out the wind, and no lights. They followed the car in front in a twelve-hour journey, with volunteers showing them where to go and helping with supplies. 鈥淲e didn鈥檛 have the back glass and the broken front glass, but we had duvets, warm duvets." "The city is turning into a cemetery. If you don't die from the shelling, you'll die from hunger." Photo: A street in Mariupol, 20 March 2022 Credit: Getty Images
