Available for over a year
In August 2018, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian-British academic, travelled to Iran to attend a conference. It was her first visit to the country. A couple of weeks later on her way back home to Australia, she was arrested at Tehran airport by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. Accused of espionage, she was imprisoned, later convicted and given a 10-year sentence. She spent over two years in prison, half of it in solitary confinement, which she described as psychological torture. Kylie was released in November 2020 and she's written about her 804 days in prison in a new book, The Uncaged Sky. She told Emma Barnett on Â鶹Éç Radio 4's Woman's Hour about the power of laughter, crying and the mental state she adopted to tolerate solitary confinement. To listen to the full discussion, head to Â鶹Éç Sounds and search for the Â鶹Éç Radio 4 Woman's Hour episode from 11 April.
