Family of Hotel Rwanda hero suing Rwanda in $400m lawsuit

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

The family of Paul Rusesabagina, who was the subject of Oscar-nominated film Hotel Rwanda, is suing the Rwandan government in the US over his alleged abduction and torture, and has filed a $400m lawsuit. Mr Rusesabagina was sentenced to 25 years for terrorism by a Rwandan court last year in what supporters called a sham trial. Now, his daughter Carina Kanimba says he has suffered a stroke while in prison and has partial facial paralysis. It was the role he is said to have played while a manager of a hotel, in helping refugees during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, that was portrayed in the Hollywood film. His daughter Carina told Focus on Africa's Bola Mosuro that some of the stars from the film and other actors have launched a t-shirt campaign calling for his release.
