Abortion law: Who will be most affected if Roe v Wade is overturned?

Newshour

Available for over a year

Women living in about half of all US states could soon lose access to abortion, according to a leaked Supreme Court document. Planned Parenthood - the largest provider of reproductive health services in the US - said it would "continue to fight like hell to protect the right to access safe, legal abortion". It says its research found that 36 million women could lose abortion access if Roe v Wade were struck down. Newshour spoke to Robin Marty, Operations Director for Alabama West Women's Center. The centre provides abortion services and she says the situation is already very difficult for women seeking reproductive care as access to services has been limited by other states in the area. Many women are having to drive up to 15 hours to seek help from the clinic. She believes that the majority of people that would be affected by a change in the law would be black and low income. "The majority of our patients are black, under the poverty line, or who already have children. Many of them are trying to go to school or who already hold jobs."
