A former security chief who oversaw the crackdown on Hong Kong's democracy movement has been appointed the territory's new leader by a small committee of Beijing loyalists. John Lee was the only candidate in the selection process to suceed Carrie Lam. He oversaw the implementation of China's controversial national security law which criminalised most forms of political protest and dissent, and reduced the city's autonomy. Nathan Law is an exiled democracy campaigner from Hong Kong and former lawmaker who left in 2020. He says that Lee is a "hawkish" candidate that shows Beijing is trying to silence any opposition and maintain tight control on Hong Kong. John Lee has served in the security forces and the police force but has no experience of government or business, which has alarmed those who see Hong Kong as a financial hub. Mr Law says the appointment shows that the future leadership style of Hong Kong will become increasingly authoritarian.
