Kherson: The volunteer drivers risking everything

Weekend

Available for over a year

The Russian appointed leader of Ukraine's Kherson region said on Thursday that that the area will 'soon become part' of the Russian Federation. Kherson is a strategically important port city with a strong industrial base. Ever since the fighting broke out, Ukrainians have been fleeing the city, and evacuating the people has never been easy. In recent weeks routes out of the Russian held territory have become increasingly dangerous to navigate. Despite the risk from shelling, mines and the Russian military, volunteer drivers have helped civilians cross the front lines for free. With other routes blocked, the drivers are risking everything by evacuating civilians out of the city. A former builder begins this account. He reckons over the last weeks he has saved over 200 people "You must have a cold heart and a firm mind for making decisions or you won't get to the final destination. Only a fool is not afraid."
