For the past two years, Cameroonian virologist John Nkengasong headed up the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The challenging role put him at the forefront of Africa’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic. But he now has a new battleground. After being nominated by US President Joe Biden and confirmed by the US Senate, Mr Nkengasong has been appointed to lead the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This new job puts him at the helm of leading efforts to reduce the global prevalence of HIV/Aids, and he told Focus on Africa's Bola Mosuro, it also means he will still be serving, not abandoning, Africa.
