Remains found in Amazon in search for missing journalist and expert

Weekend

Available for over a year

Brazilian police have found possible human remains in their search for UK journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. The police say experts will analyse the "organic material" found in a river near the town of Atalaia do Norte in the remote Amazon rainforest. The pair went missing while travelling by boat on a reporting trip on Sunday. Indigenous groups say both men have received threats for their work in the region, which has seen illegal fishing, logging, mining and drug trafficking. Â鶹Éç South American correspondent Katy Watson said it was a "significant and devastating development", and that the remains were found close to where the pair had last been seen. She goes on to say Dom Phillips is an experienced journalist, interested in the challenges of conservation in the Amazon, and worked closely with Bruno Pereira, one of the foremost indigenous specialists. She thinks the men may have made enemies in their quest to protect indigenous communities from those involved in local logging, mining and trafficking.
