SA underage drinking: 'Alcohol numbed me from reality'

Outside Source

Available for over a year

Twenty-one teenagers died in a tavern in South Africa after celebrating the end of school exams at a tavern. The victims were found at the Enyobeni Tavern in the town of East London, and investigations into the cause are still ongoing. The deaths have prompted conversations about South Africa's drinking culture. Thapelo explains why he started drinking when he was just 11 years old, saying he was raised in a poor household without a father, and watching his parent bringing him up, made it hard for him to grapple with reality. He describes how this led to him getting involved with crime to finance his habit. Photo: Young people raise their drinks together Credit: Getty Images
