In August 1972, thousands of people of South Asian descent who lived in Uganda were told to leave by then-President Idi Amin. Later, President Museveni reversed the decision of his predecessor, encouraging those who left to return and set up businesses in Uganda. On the fiftieth anniversary of Idi Amin's edict, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem praises the contribution that Asians and other non-indigenous communities make to the Ugandan economy today, but says more work needs to be done to ensure integration.
