Online scams and cyber attacks have "hit the roof" in some African nations, according to cyber security firm Kaspersky. The company found that there were nearly 11m attacks across three countries in just three months since March. Kenya appeared to be the worst affected with more than 5m phishing attacks - four times as much compared to the first 3 months of the year. South Africa and Nigeria were close behind. The main threats are scams, phishing and social engineering - sometimes called 'human hacking鈥 scams' - but all involve tricking unwary users and even enterprises into divulging personal or private information and financial credentials. Dr Bright Gameli Mawudor is the Chief Technology Officer at the Nairobi-based data science company, Xetova. He told Focus on Africa's Bola Mosuro people are much more prone to being scammed because everything is being done online, but there are crucial steps that web users can take to protect themselves.
