Reflections on Ukraine's independence

Weekend

Available for over a year

Last Wednesday, and in the midst of a grinding war, Ukraine commemorated its declaration of independence from the Soviet Union 31 years ago. Russia's response to the commemoration was a single attack on a passenger train which left over 20 people dead. In an essay written specially for Weekend, the Ukrainian journalist, Olga Tokariuk, reflects on the significance of the date - August 24th.
