Yoruba superhero to be turned into TV cartoon series

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Iyanu is a teenage orphan who spends her days studying Yoruba history and ancient arts but yearns for a normal life. Although she has no recollection of her past, she discovers she has ancient divine powers and with these newly-found abilities she joins forces with two other teenagers to embark on a remarkable journey to save her people from evil. This mythical adventure, entitled Iyanu: Child of Wonder, was written by Lagos-born animator and filmmaker, Roye Okupe. It is now being adapted as a series for the cable television channel Cartoon Network and will be streamed on HBO Max. Roye Okupe has been speaking to Focus on Africa's Bola Mosuro on realising his dream to bring Yoruba history and mythology to a wider, mainstream audience.
