Italian-Ivorian union activist becomes MP

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

When Aboubakar Soumahoro arrived in Italy in 2002, he experienced first-hand the abuses that other migrant workers like him had to endure, from working 12 hours a day without a proper salary to having to live in appalling unhygienic conditions. That experience pushed Aboubakar to enter the Italian political arena to try to change things. Since then, the Ivorian activist has set up a union for farmer workers and has garnered a wide following on social media through his videos in which he eloquently lays out the injustices some field workers have to put up with. But how will his ideas score in Italy, a country that has just voted for a party with an outspoken tough stance on immigration? Photo: Ivorian-Italian MP Aboubakar Soumahoro. Credit: Getty Images.
