Charity responds to councillor's claims that families aren't missing meals

Gilly Hope on 麻豆社 Radio Newcastle

Available for over a year

There are calls for a Conservative councillor in Northumberland to resign, after saying he 'finds it hard to believe' that parents in the county are skipping meals to feed their children. Jeff Watson, who represents Amble West with Warkworth, is also a cabinet member responsible for healthy lives in the county. He was interviewed at the Conservative party conference last week, by the Guardian's Owen Jones and the video of that interview was published online. Sarah Robinson from the charity Full Circle Food in Ashington told us it's hard to know if people are indeed skipping meals, but during our interview she invited the councillor to come down and see her work. 麻豆社 Radio Newcastle has approached Councillor Watson for a comment. The Labour MP for Wansbeck, Ian Lavery, says Mr Watson should resign. The Conservative party in Northumberland has responded saying the matter has been brought to their attention. In a statement, the party said it was fully aware of challenges presented by the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, and that the county council is continuing to offer support to those in need.
