Kenya's president disbands 'killer police squad'

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Kenya's President William Ruto has ordered the disbandment of an elite police unit which has allegedly been linked to extrajudicial killings in the country in recent years. The Special Service Unit (SSU) was created more than twenty years ago. The president, who came to office in September, said the move was part of efforts to overhaul the country's security sector. Human rights organisations have documented many cases of enforced disappearances and killings that they say are directly attributed to the highly feared unit. Hussein Khalid is the executive director of an non-governmental organisation called Haki Africa. He says "merely disbanding" the SSU is not enough and many people in the country will want to see officers investigated. Photo: Kenya's President William Ruto. Credit: Reuters.
