Millions in Bangladesh affected by Cyclone Sitrang

Newsday

Available for over a year

One country that is particularly exposed to extreme weather events linked to climate change is Bangladesh. The country has currently been hugely affected by Cyclone Sitrang, which killed a number of people on the southern coast on October 25. Communication and power lines were severed and many homes destroyed. However, authorities managed to evacuate one million people to safety before the storm hit. Shafiq Alam is the bureau chief for AFP news organisation in Bangladesh. He has been covering the cyclone, and told Newsday about how people in the country are reacting to climate emergency events like these. He said that although "they are more resilient... they know they have to live with these extreme climate events, and that is becoming more frequent."
