Gambia’s disappearing migrants

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

Today marks the day when a year ago two hundred Gambians, most of them young men, boarded a boat in Gunjur, a coastal town in the south of the country bound for Spain via the Mediterranean. However a year later and their whereabouts are unknown. Many of them left without informing their families, who only found out after their loved ones had already left The Gambia in search of greener pastures. Thirty nine of them hailed from Gunjur and most people believe their loved ones perished at sea, but some think it’s possible they’re being held captive, as their bodies have not been found.
