Mona Seif: “Alaa Abdel Fattah’s life in danger”

Focus on Africa

Available for over a year

We speak to Mona Seif, the sister of jailed British-Egyptian activist, Alaa Abdel Fattah, who says that she feels the Egyptian state is intent on pushing him to his death. The family were recently informed Fattah has “undergone a medical intervention” after several days of refusing water – escalating his months-long hunger strike. In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Egypt's prosecutor general said that Abdel Fattah was in "good health" and did not need to be transferred to hospital. The 40 year old, who is imprisoned for allegedly "spreading false news", has become a symbol of the 60,000 political prisoners believed by human rights groups to be languishing in Egyptian jails.
