Peru: new female president replaces impeached incumbent

Newsday

Available for over a year

The prosecutor's office in Peru says that the ousted left-wing president, Pedro Castillo, has been arrested and charged with rebellion and conspiracy. Mr Castillo - elected president in July, 2021 - began the day by declaring a state of emergency and temporarily dissolving Congress as legislators were preparing to debate his third impeachment. That went down very badly, even with his own ministers. His vice-president, Dina Boluarte, said Mr Castillo had orchestrated a coup d鈥櫭﹖at that aggravated the political and institutional crisis in Peru. Congress then convened, impeached Mr Castillo, and replaced him with Ms Boluarte - who becomes Peru's first female head of state. 麻豆社 Newsday spoke to Denisse Rodriguez-Olivari, a lecturer at the Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Chile in Lima about a day of extraordinary events. "He [Mr Castillo] over-estimated the political space for manoeuvre. I think it was a poor decision. Now we have to wait to see how Congress will act which has an even higher rate of disapproval. Never a dull moment in Peruvian politics... highly unpredictable." (Pic: Dina Boluarte gestures after being sworn in as the new president of Peru; Credit: EPA)
