Lockerbie bombing suspect in US custody

Newsday

Available for over a year

A former Libyan intelligence officer has been accused of making the bomb that downed Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in Scotland in 1988. Abu Agila Masud is the first person charged on US soil in connection with the attack, and he has appeared in court. A device on board the plane exploded as the flight was flying over the UK, killing 243 passengers, six crew and 11 people on the ground. It remains the deadliest terrorist incident to have taken place on British soil. Among the dead were citizens from 21 different countries, including 190 Americans and 43 British citizens. In court in Washington, Abu Agila Masud wasn't asked to enter a plea, and said only that he wouldn't speak until he'd seen a lawyer. The circumstances of his transfer from Libya remain unclear, with unconfirmed reports that he was abducted by armed men in Libya. Robert Monetti, who lost his 20-year-old son Rick in the bombing, spoke to Newsday saying, "His spirit lives on, even though he doesn't." (Photo credit: Court drawing of Abu Agila Masud.
