Peru: National state of emergency declared

Newshour

Available for over a year

The Peruvian government under the new president, Dina Boluarte, has declared a state of emergency.聽 Formally the vice-president, she took over last week when Pedro Castillo was ousted - he's now in jail charged with "Rebellion", after he tried to dissolve congress in an attempt to avoid impeachment.聽 His own party accused him of an attempted coup - but his supporters in the country have taken to the streets to protest.聽 There have been road blocks and demonstrations, at least seven people have been killed in clashes with the police. While there is widespread relief that Mr Castillo did not succeed, there is also unease about what will happen next. Simeon Tegel is a journalist in the capital Lima: "'Although Pedro Castillo was very unpopular, with approval ratings in the 20s, Congress is even more unpopular... two things they both have in common is corruption permeating Congress and Castillo's administration."
