What will it mean for African nations to join the NASA Artemis Accords?

Newsday

Available for over a year

Last week Rwanda and Nigeria signed the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Artemis Accords on the sidelines of the US-Africa summit. They are now the first African nations to join the accords which seek to establish fair, transparent, safe, and sustainable space exploration. Newsday was joined by Joseph Abakunda, the Chief Strategy Officer of Rwanda's Space Agency. Referring to Rwanda's decision to explore space to solve everyday problems for the country, he says: "Rwanda has been at the forefront of testing out new technologies, so space is not the first nor the last. But if Rwanda believe something is going to support its citizens long term, it's worth a shot." (Photo by Kevin Dietsch / Getty Images)
