Ukraine's President Zelensky heads to US for first foreign trip

Newsday

Available for over a year

The White House has confirmed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit Washington DC on Wednesday. This would be his first foreign trip, since Russia's invasion in February. There have been suggestions in US media that he may address Congress, however leaks to the press have raised security concerns and his plans could still change. The United States has provided more direct military support to Ukraine than any other country, with a new $44bn aid package pending. However Mr Zelensky has appealed for greater assistance. Democratic Representative in California, Brad Sherman, is a member of the bi-partisan Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, and spoke to Newsday about the relationship Zelensky has with the United States at present. He says: "The fact is we're doing an awful lot, Ukraine couldn't survive without our efforts, Europe is doing a lot on the financial side, but America is doing virtually all on the military aid side. And I think that it's important that behind the scenes, the war aims are coordinated and reflect not only the view points of Kyiv, but also a broader world view."
