Episode details

Available for over a year
Twenty-one-year-old Alvin has autism but this has not stopped him from getting a job he enjoys. He is also at college, studying agriculture and is hoping to become self-employed. Journalist Mike Kaloki went to meet him and his mother, Rosemary, at their home in rural Kenya. They told him how getting the employer and co-workers to be patient, and establishing a clear routine, enabled Alvin to fit in very well at his work placement. The challenges faced by people with a condition or disability that is not visible, is not often discussed in Africa and was one of the topics that Focus on Africa guest editor, Ire Aderinokun, wanted to highlight.
