How will new US migration policies impact Nicaragua?

Newsday

Available for over a year

The US is to allow in more migrants from parts of central and South America. President Joe Biden said some 30,000 people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela will be allowed in each month - if they apply from their home countries. But he also promised to send back any people crossing the border illegally under a new deal with Mexico. Nicaraguan Journalist Cindy Regidor, says "we will see a definite decrease in the number of Nicaraguans arriving at the border in the next weeks but I think that won't fully stop Nicaraguan migration". She added that to stop migration you need to address the "root cause" - the five years of socio -political and humanitarian crises the country is grappling with. Regidor believes the new law may help the US but "does not work so well for vulnerable people from these countries 鈥hey don't have the means to apply for the humanitarian parole the authorises have created which entails a process that requires a sponsor or having a passport 鈥 this is a violation of the US refugee law and the refugee convention and clearly not a good thing for people who need to seek asylum the most."
