Nazi map sparks treasure hunt in the Netherlands

Newsday

Available for over a year

In the final days of World War Two, four German soldiers buried a hoard of gold coins and jewels in the middle of nowhere in the Dutch countryside. Nearly 80 years later, hopes of finding the buried loot have been raised after the National Archives of the Netherlands released a map to the treasure. British historian Guy Walters and his son are among those who have arrived in rural Ommeren in the east of the country armed with metal detectors and shovels. He told Newsday: 鈥淎fter the war, the Dutch tried to find it. A German soldier came back and tried to find it. Some Americans tried to find it. Nobody managed to find it鈥o the chances of finding it now in 2023 are very slim. I suspect that one of the Germans or a local probably found it after the war and kept it for himself.鈥 (Picture: Shows generic image of a treasure chest full of gold coins. Credit: Getty Images.)
