Iran: Who is Jamshid Sharmahd?

Newsday

Available for over a year

Jamshid Sharmahd is a German-Iranian man who may face the death penalty. He was born in Tehran, but moved to Germany when he was seven years old. He later went to the United States and made a life there, where he lived with his daughter, son and wife. Jamshid was a critic of Iran's regime, being very outspoken of the country's reported human right's abuses, and he would frequently air his thoughts on radio programmes, and via his own personal blogs. He was reportedly threatened by authorities in Iran due to the comments he made about the government. In July of 2020, his family say he was on a business trip to Dubai when he was kidnapped and taken to Iran against his will. He has been in jail ever since, and was charged with a terror offence against the state. However he and his family insist this was a charge brought against him for being critical of Iranian authorities. His family now fear he will face the death penalty, and are awaiting a verdict on his case. Jamshid's daughter Gazelle has been campaigning to make his story heard. She is the founder and spokesperson for the 'Save Sharmahd Campaign'. She told Newsday, "It is unimaginable to go through this time, and to think that any moment they can kill your loved one, and you wouldn't even know if they have killed them or not. My grandma this weekend was just crying the whole time, she was just crying like they had already assassinated my dad..." (Photo Credit: Gazelle Sharmahd)
